Brief

My Input

Isolation Magazine was a project that was made to make underground alternative news in New Zealand easier to find. Information on latest trends, gigs, fashion, etc. is hard to find when it comes to the alternative scene in NZ, and the aim of this magazine was to bring light to this issue.
This project was mainly focused on refining my magazine design and experimenting with typography in a set grid layout. I also experimented a lot with grunge graphics, photography, and an overall alternative style in order to represent the contents of the magazine visually.

Main Concepts

Since Isolation Magazine was a project was all about the alternative scene, many visual aspects of this project were heavily inspired by already existing principles within the worldwide alternative community. Things like a blood red colour for the main highlights, scratchy and edgy typography, a paper cut-out theme (reminiscent of old-school punk culture) and more.

Since the alternative scene is all about modifying mainstream media into something a little bit more edgy, it was hard to find the perfect line between modern mainstream design and alternative grungy design. I feel like I accomplished this task rather well and made final outcomes that portrayed both sides of design without clashing and interfering with each other, proving that alternative design doesn’t always have to be so abstract.

OUTCOMES

Logo

The Isolation Magazine logo is drawn in a handwritten “edgy & grungy font”, accompanied by a red paper-ripped background. The red highlight colour represents the grungy aspect of the alternative community, and has a “hardcore” feel to it.

The font is hand-drawn in order to represent the uniqueness and personalisation of the alternative community and their styles.
01.

Brand Identity

The fonts in this project were  selected due to the grungy and alternative nature of them. The header font was perfect for any kind of bold statements and the body font was perfect for legibility.

The black and white have good contrast while bringing in that modern feel that I wanted with this project. The red (as stated before) helps to encourage the grungy aspect of the alternative community.
02.

Magazine Cover

The Isolation Magazine cover was designed in a way that recognises the design staples of average magazines and brings in that “alterative twist”.

The ripped paper aesthetic brought up by old-school punk really gives the cover a feel that isn’t present in modern day magazines, further inviting the alternative grunginess to the cover as a whole. Many design aspects of modern day magazines (like the layout) are still visible on the cover, but have been simplified or “alt”-ified.
03.

Content Pages

The content pages were made with an average magazine design grid-style type in mind. However, in order to differentiate and make the content more accessible, the load and amount of content is less than an average magazine.

Personally I found that a lot of modern magazines have way too much information on them and are way too overstimulating. To counteract this, I just made the design of the pages more simplified and stylalised into the Isolation branding tone.
04.

Page Spreads

Double page spreads were also included in this magazine in order to highlight specific sections and give the reader a break from all the words.

Mockups

Mockups were made to represent and show how the magazine could look like in-situ.
